THE STORY THAT LIVES THROUGH ETERNITY
A two-part cinematic retelling of Maharishi Valmiki's epic — the journey of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana, through exile, devotion and the eternal struggle between dharma and adharma. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Produced by Namit Malhotra.
The Ramayana is one of the two great Sanskrit epics of ancient India, traditionally attributed to Maharishi Valmiki. What follows is the traditional narrative arc of the epic. Events marked Part One are confirmed to appear in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Part One; the rest belong to the wider epic and may be depicted in Part Two or not filmed at all. Nothing here is invented dialogue or scene detail.
King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, childless for years, performs the Putrakameshti yagna. Rama is born to Queen Kaushalya, with Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna born soon after to Kaikeyi and Sumitra.
The four princes are raised and trained in Ayodhya under the guidance of Sage Vashishtha, learning statecraft, scripture and the arts of war.
Sage Vishwamitra arrives at Ayodhya asking for Rama's protection against demons harassing his hermitage. Rama and Lakshmana leave with him, beginning their first trials.
In Mithila, Rama meets Sita, daughter of King Janaka, and wins her hand by stringing and breaking the divine bow of Shiva at her swayamvara.
On the eve of Rama's coronation, Manthara persuades Kaikeyi to claim two boons once promised by Dasharatha: Bharata's coronation, and Rama's exile for fourteen years.
Rama accepts the exile without protest. Sita and Lakshmana insist on accompanying him, and the three leave Ayodhya's comforts for the forest.
The three live an austere life moving between hermitages, eventually settling at Panchavati in the Dandaka forest, encountering sages and forest-dwellers along the way.
Ravana's sister Surpanakha approaches Rama and is rebuffed; in the confrontation that follows, Lakshmana wounds her, and she flees to Lanka seeking revenge.
Ravana sends the demon Maricha, disguised as a golden deer, to lure Rama away from the hermitage, drawing Lakshmana away as well and leaving Sita alone.
Disguised as a mendicant, Ravana abducts Sita and carries her to Lanka. The vulture Jatayu intervenes to protect her and is mortally wounded by Ravana.
Rama and Lakshmana search the forests for Sita, meeting the dying Jatayu, and eventually forming an alliance with Sugriva, the exiled king of the vanaras of Kishkindha.
Hanuman, minister to Sugriva, becomes Rama's most devoted follower. He leaps across the ocean to Lanka, finds Sita in captivity, and returns with news of her.
The vanara army builds a bridge to Lanka. After a prolonged war, Rama confronts and defeats Ravana, securing the triumph of dharma over adharma.
